SPEEDING UP SORTING OF RECYCLED WASTE
A much increased amount of waste material is being handled by Mid UK Recycling following installation of new sorting machinery by Tong Engineering.

The Lincolnshire firm, which processes domestic waste from a number of local authorities, has increased five-fold the capacity of its sorting line at Caythorpe, near Sleaford, separating waste paper, cardboard, plastics and metals from householders ‘green’ bins for delivery to recycling plants.

Mid UK Recycling turned to Tong Engineering to design and manufacture a sorting line installed on a platform almost three metres high so that the individual waste streams could be collected in larger heaps throughout the day and then moved with a loading shovel.

"The new machinery has dramatically increased the speed and efficiency of the sorting," says Chris Mountain, managing director of Mid UK Recycling. "It is easier for our workers to sort the waste, and it’s a great benefit being able to move the sorted waste in bulk once a day rather than every few minutes."

At the recycling centre waste is loaded into a 6.5 m long bulk intake hopper and fed on to the heavy-duty sorting belt, almost 15 m long and 1.2 m wide, where operators pick off waste into different chutes according to the type of material.

Tong Engineering originally developed their handling and sorting machinery for the potato and vegetable industry where they are recognised as leading suppliers. Now they are increasingly using their design and manufacturing expertise to develop equipment for materials handling in industry generally.
