The largest grading line installed by Tong Peal has just completed the off-the-field handling of up to 1000 tonnes of potatoes a day for one of the largest growers in the West Midlands.

The Suckley family at Hopton, near Shrewsbury, were looking for high-capacity mobile grading facilities for their contract growing operation stretching from Cheshire to Gloucestershire.

Tong Peal designed two grading lines each capable of handling 500 tonnes a day and with capacity to function in adverse field conditions. They work in tandem with three two-row harvesters, necessitating a high grading throughout.

The lines have a 4.8m (16ft) grading width, with inspection facilities for up to 32 people to achieve high output in all conditions.

Other special features are the incorporation of the new Evolution soil extractor and additional access gantries to facilitate cleaning and routine maintenance. The equipment is mounted on 16 commercial sprung axles for ease of travel, with contract farms up to 100 miles apart.

The Suckley family, who have invested around £250,000 in the new facilities, grow more than 1700 hectares of potatoes for crisping, pre-packing and other markets.

Managing director Charles Tong commented that from day one when the commissioning of the grading systems was made they have operated efficiently and trouble-free.
